The truth that people often don't want to hear

I'm going to say something a bit surprising, even shocking to some.  This will be even more surprising/shocking given that I should soon be producing content for SEO Chat.

Here's the truth: search engines actually aren't very good sources of traffic.

Spending time worrying about your search rankings is therefore a waste of time.

If you do things correctly, you'll get good search rankings built on the foundation of your growing market authority.  However, good search rankings should be icing on an already existing cake that is pretty darn good without it.

The best traffic comes from being a market authority.  The best traffic comes when what you have to say is so good that other people want to send their own traffic to you just so that they can be associated with you.

The best traffic comes when other people tell their email lists about your site.

So let me ask you, what are you doing right now to be worthy of that?

If the answer is "nothing", then what can you start doing right now that will make you worthy?

Here's the thing, you can try to play games, spend effort on link building and essentially trying to "game" the search engines and eventually get good enough rankings to make a little (or possibly even a lot) of money.

But what are you going to do when someone comes along with a strategy of absolute market leadership?  What are you going to do when you are unseated from your top positions by someone that has established an undeniable market authority?

Why not become that authority yourself right now?  That way you have an overwhelming headstart that someone else won't easily be able to catch up to.
