How A 7 Day Old Blog Attracted 500 Visitors And Over $1,000,000 In New Customers

Apply These Tips To Make More
From Your Site As Soon As Next Week
A week ago today I started a blog over at wordpress.  It's at http://mattgoffrey.wordpress.com

In that single week I've gotten 500 visitors to the blog, 50 people signed up to the mailing list, but more importantly 12 new consulting clients.  Because of how I'm paid, each of these should be worth $200,000 to me pretty easily if they follow my advice (and most do because of how I work with people).

So how did I do this?  How did such new blog ... and a free blog hosted on wordpress no less ... get traffic, email subscribers, and new business?

The Death of Traditional SEO

At this point, the changes at Google is going to force me to pronounce that traditional SEO is dead (I think I'm the first major person to say this).

Search and social are now so intertwined with the new Search+ changes at Google that traditional link building and all of that are largely a waste of time.

Check out this article that I wrote for Opportunities Planet on why SEO is dead.

Are you asking your friends?

+1s are becoming a major big deal when it comes to ranking well on Google.  Such a major big deal that I have sites ranking well right now that have zero inbound links but plenty of +1s.  You could almost literally build an entire SEO strategy around this one technique alone.

The thing is, often it doesn't even take that many, especially if you're a local business.  Getting just your friends and family to +1 your pages and leave good reviews/comments on your Google Places page is often more than enough to make you the dominant player on Google.

So, are you asking your friends and family to +1 your pages?

In fact, since you're here, could you do me a favor and hit the +1 button real quick?

Becareful with +1 buying

I still remember back when Digg was a powerhouse.  They came out with an update that dramatically altered their ranking algorithm.

The change had to do with looking at how often the exact same people "dugg" the exact same articles.  If people very often dugg the same things, then their votes began to count for less.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that Google will probably be doing the same thing.  That means that when you're buying those +1 votes you need to spread around who you use and when.

Further, just like Google is doing today with Places, I am certain that Google is going to be expecting a variety of different types of media engagement.

In other words, if all you get is +1s Google will find that strange.  If all you get is facebook likes, Google will similarly find that strange.

My point is to make sure that you get a little of a lot of things from several different sources.

Gettin Sneaky With It

At SEOchat I wrote an article titled "Real Link Wheel Secrets To Top Google Rankings."

In that article I explain how to use "link wheels" to improve how you rank on Google (and this method works for Bing and Yahoo as well).

The thing is, at least on Google, Google Plus pages seem to be getting some amount of preferential treatment.

What if you created a Google Plus Page with a title that narrowly targets a given search term and throw a link wheel against that?

Oh yeah, did I mention that Google Plus Pages aren't "sandboxed" at all?  In other words, a Google Plus Page can start getting top rankings within a few DAYS.

So if you point a link wheel at one of those puppies you could quickly get top results.

Now, what if you also get a ton of people (fiverr.com) to +1 some of your Page posts, to add the page to their circles, and so on.

No Google is seeing that your page is getting shared and everything else.

This can very quickly create a dominating search position on Google.

Now let me caution you ... be worthy.  I know I say that a lot, but this is important.  A plus page that doesn't give some good reason for a visitor to have gone there isn't going to help you much.

Flip that around, and make your Plus Page a great destination and you can generate a growing horde of customers.

Create your tutorials

Tutorials are powerful ways of attracting new visitors and of keeping current visitors coming back.

Often they are fairly long-ish and present great ways of you demonstrating your expertise.

Not only that, but a beginning tutorial on how to do something leads to more advanced tutorials.  This brings your visitors back more and gives you yet more chance to demonstrate expertise.

Now, all of that is fine and dandy but here's what is even better about tutorials; they are heavily shared.

In other words, they spread the social media networks fairly quickly.  This gives you boosts to your search rankings along with traffic from a growing variety of sources.

What tutorials can you create for your market?

Social As Market Intelligence Tool

With the explosive growth of social networks, most notably Facebook (but Twitter and Google+ as well) we are finally at a position where real, meaningful, intelligence can be gathered about almost any market.

Twitter with it's real time "pulse" regarding what's going on.  Facebook with it's user count rapidly approaching 1 billion, and Google+ with its rapid expansion and obvious preferential search treatment driving further growth.

Each of these locations provides their own mechanisms for search for and collecting market intelligence data.

And let me be clear about something here, I'm not talking about something basic like "mentions" of your company.  I mean true knowledge regarding what people in literally any given market want to spend their money on.

Not only that, but this market intelligence comes with knowing exactly how customers are wording their pains and desires making it easier than ever to specifically target products and services for maximum growth.

It's time to implement a massive market intelligence gathering effort at your company.

Why not just ask?

In the book "Hierarchy of Contagiousness" the author says that one of the things most likely to make a piece of content likely to be shared is by asking for it to be shared.

In other words, a tweet that ends with "please retweet" is much more likely to be retweeeted.  Likewise with people asking for something to be shared.

The simple act of asking for a share makes it much more likely that a share will take place.

Given that getting your content shared can mean more traffic from more places AND it can mean better search rankings ... when you create something really good, why not ask for it to be shared with others?

Facebook Traffic

Facebook is one of my favorite sources of traffic.  You can use your fan page and drive people from that to your site.  Then there is facebook advertising.

Now, like most PPC ads these days, facebook advertising has gotten a little expensive ... or so it would seem.

Most terms have recommended prices well over $1 per click.  The truth however is that it is VERY possible to get 5 cent clicks on facebook and the great part is that this traffic is highly scalable.

When you request your free strategy session from me, we can talk about how this is done.  To request your strategy session just click the link at the top of the page.
